Mayan Rainforest Remedies

The ancient civilization of the Mayans extended throughout Mesoamerica, flourishing especially during the first millennium AD. The Mayan civilization was well known for its advancement in the arts, architecture, science, writing, mathematics and astronomy. In addition, the Mayans had a fully developed system of native healing, taking many of their salves, balms, ointments and other healing treatments from the abundance of the rainforests in Central America.

The Modern Mayan civilization is still based largely in Central America, with population centers extending from southern Mexico, through Belize and Guatemala, and to the western portions of Honduras and El Salvador. The native healing methods of the Mayans have been preserved throughout the centuries, and even still today these methods are practiced within the community and are even being shared more widely with the rest of the world.

There are many elements to the Rainforest Remedies of the Mayan Civilization, including massage, proper nutrition and herbology, and emotional and spiritual healing. The Ix Chel Centre and the Traditional Healers Foundation in Belize are among various initiatives aimed at preserving the traditional natural healing methods of the Mayans, and incorporating the knowledge of the shamans into education for children and the next generation. In addition, a 6,000 acre portion of the rainforest in Belize is under preservation by the government. The Terra Nova Rainforest Reserve is a Medical Plant Reserve and the first Ethnobiomedical Forest Reserve.
